Snacks are generally served either as an entree or during tea time. Bajji is a delicious, popular snack, which takes minutes to prepare and is a combination of flour and a raw vegetable.
This dish is prepared with onions and channa dal or besan flour, quite similar to making pakoras but bajjis are mostly prepared by dipping the vegetable in the semi liquid flour batter!!
An ideal snack on a cold winter evening or a rainy day, prepared and served on the roadside in India too!!!!
Ingredients to make 20 -25
3 Medium Sized Onions
2 Cups Oil
For the Batter
1 ½ Cups Channa Dal Flour
¼Cup Rice Flour
½ Tsp Red Chilli Powder
¼ Tsp. Asafoetida Powder
A Pinch Yellow Food Colouring (optional)
¾ – 1 Cup Water
1-2 Tsp Salt
Preparation
Peel the onions and gently slice them into thin circular discs and keep aside.. .
Mix the ingredients for the batter thoroughly adding the water little by little to make a thick semi liquid batter, ensuring that there are no lumps in the batter
Heat the oil in a deep frying pan on a medium flame.
Dip the chopped onion discs one by one into the batter and gently drop it in the oil.
Fry it in batches of 6-8 depending on the size of the pan.
Fry till it turns golden brown.
Note: Vegetables like Potatoes, Chokoes, Banana Chilli, Spinach leaves, Raw Banana, Cauliflower florets can be prepared in a similar manner. A combination of these vegetables can be individually prepared as well to make a platter of assorted bajjis!
